WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

Facing Your Mortality is a personal development course for the general public and anyone wishing to face death with less fear and more peace. The course is a gentle look at mortality through different cultural lenses. It offers the learner ways to contemplate and explore death and dying in a psychologically healthy way and in a safe environment.

This course is also helpful to End-of-Life Doulas, Coaches, and Hospice professionals as they work with clients and patients exhibiting existential anxiety.

Facing Your Mortality is a revised and evolved version of our earlier course, Practices for Death. While it includes many of the same foundational themes, it also offers new insights and expanded practices. If you previously completed Practices for Death, we recommend connecting with a program advisor before registering to determine whether this course will be a meaningful next step for you.

CAVEAT: ASSESS YOUR READINESS

Some honest self-assessment about your readiness for the practices of facing your mortality is required. While the practices do not involve a rumination on the morbid aspects of the dying process, for many people, thinking and talking about death evokes a range of uncomfortable feelings, including anxiety, sadness, despair, fear, and even terror.

This will largely depend on a person’s previous experience with death, their bereavement history, and any previous difficulties processing grief. Therefore, discernment and preparation are important.

If you choose to take the course, take care of yourself and slow down or stop as needed. Reach out to a counselor, therapist, or spiritual leader for deeper reflection if needed as well.

COURSE TOPICS:

  1. Values and Priorities - Why it’s helpful to face your mortality and discern what matters most to you
  2. Faith Traditions - a sampling of teachings about mortality from various faith traditions
  3. Impermanance and Lightening - Ways to look at mortality
  4. Secular Practices - a sampling of practices for death
  5. A Meditation for Death - a longer experiential practice for death
